Wine comments

The first release of Max & Me ‘Mirooloo Road’ Woodcarvers Vineyard Riesling.

Max & Me 2017 ‘Mirooloo Road’ Riesling is sourced from our near-neighbour, Michael Mason. Selection of the grapes is paramount to this wine, and the site is cool and with a southerly aspect and good water availability. Great things to keep plushness in the ripening berries and a healthy canopy, but the site still provides ample natural restraint through the limited fertility and soil depth of the quartz and mica schist underlain with shallow sandstone bedrock.

Pick date: 6/04/2017. Flavour intensity is a focus in the winemaking here. Allowing the grapes to ripen lifts the flavour-weight and softens the acid, and by utilising some of the light pressings in the cuvée and fermenting through to dryness, a nice savoury counter to the naturally fragrant lime-citrus characteristics of the Riesling juice balances the palate.

Max & Me | 2017 Mirooloo Road Woodcarvers Vineyard Eden Valley Riesling
A couple of our winemaking mates have been very bullish about what they have in the winery from Eden Valley and Clare in 2017, so far as whites are concerned. We tasted our first offering this week and its a cracker. The 2017 Max & Me ‘Woodcarvers Vineyard’ Mirooloo Road Riesling is Eden Valley at its best. There’s intense lime on the nose and in the mouth. You get some floral spice and there’s richness with precision.
The finish is dry, chalky and long. Winemaker Phil Lehmann makes the Vickery wines with John Vickery and you can see he’s learnt how to capture the brilliance of Riesling fruit as per his mentor. There were only 250 dozen made and Phil has given us a small allocation. Price is just $30 per bottle and it is an outstanding, world class wine for the money.

New or newish range of wines from Phil and Sarah Lehmann out of the Eden Valley.

Pale colour but with a lovely tinge of green. It’s all just golden, in quality terms, from there. Lemon and lime with spots of kaffir leaf and spice. It’s expressive and flavoursome but it crackles and soars out through the finish. A perfect young riesling. Succulent-but-well-honed flavour. Incredibly enjoyable right now, but with a future.
